But as I was scrolling through my emails and checking out some quick fall projects, I ran across a cute wall hanging project by Leslie at the Seasoned Homemaker. I want to be sure to give her due credit and the link to her project is here:

http://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/spooky-spider-mini-quilt/

I like Leslie's black and white version, but pictured more of a Halloween-oriented color scheme. I pulled some fabric from my stash, a beautiful autumn orange (with leaves even!), black flannel scraps for the spider and black with white music notes flannel scraps for the binding and backing. I thought the music notes would make a skeleton-type frame and it worked beautifully! I also found a yellow tinted button to use for the face and I like the touch of character it added.

Here's an outdoor pic:

I also practiced my FMQ, using a great metallic silver thread for the webbing and an orange zig zag stitch for the spider's decoration. It really was a quick project that I completed in an afternoon.

Here's my takeaway lesson: When feeling frustrated with a project, walk away, take a break, do something fun. I had been working on the Farm Girl Vintage blocks and had gotten really frustrated with a mistake I made on the block I was working on; which made it a perfect time to stop and work on a quick, fun project. When I came back to my problem child block a couple of days later, everything magically fell into place and I completed the work on it quickly.

Here's a picture of the FGV blocks on my design wall:

I am making the 12" blocks and am currently on the final row, I think LOL. My goal is to finish the blocks before I start Christmas sewing.

But....guess what I received in my email yesterday? There's a 2016 Quilter's Planner Sew-Along!!!! Because I already have my 2016 Quilter's Planner (and not so patiently waiting for my 2017 Quilter's Planner), I have the Scrappy Picnic Plaid quilt pattern by Lee Heinrich already. I haven't made a scrap quilt yet, so I'm going to use up some of the scraps from my FGV blocks and join in. Check out quiltersplanner.com for the details and join the sew along to conquer those scraps!

All those saved up packages, magazines and catalogs!

See what happens when I have a lot of down time and unlimited internet access?

First off, I was so excited to receive not one, but TWO Fat Quarter Shop boxes of goodies! One was the September Sugar and Spice #sewsampler box full of great supplies: a Sweet Orchard Rolie Polie Down Grapevine Lane for Riley Blake Designs, a custom FQS ruler pal, a Clover Seam Ripper, a June Tailor small spool holder, a quilt pattern, a block pattern, and a Create zipper bag. All of these are great additions to my studio!

Secondly, I was absolutely delighted to receive an Applique package from the FQS Sewing Month Celebration Giveaway #4. Oh my gosh, I was so excited to receive the news that I had won that package! In it was an FQS tin set, TEN (10!) spools of 80 wt Aurifill applique thread, 16 straw needles, Poke-A-Dots Sticky Fingers, and a charm pack of gorgeous Bella solids. I can't wait to get started on some hand applique work!

I also had a couple of boxes waiting for me from C&T Publishing. They've been having $5 Blowout sales on weekends and I just love finding great new bargain resources for quilting and sewing. I find this especially helpful as I create by myself and, in addition to having great blogs to follow, I enjoy having quality books to pull ideas and techniques from. I also enjoy getting deals on C&T supplies, like the kraft-tex that I've been wanting to try out - perhaps with that new Boutique Bags book ;)

Now let me talk a little bit about a great quilty experience I had during our travels. I was able to stop in at the Threads that Bind Quilt Shop in Coos Bay, OR during our trip up the west coast. I was perusing the shop when I heard chatting in the back and I decided to see if there was a quilting group gathered. Normally that's not something I would do; but I quilt alone so much that I just wanted to take some time to connect and see what others were up to. I was delighted to find four quilters in the back enjoying their time together, and they were so kind and welcoming to me. I sat down with them for a while and discussed the different projects they were working on. One of the ladies was working on an incredibly beautiful applique quilt that is now with it's third quilter carrying on the work of the two deceased predecessors. The quilters were also collaborating on ideas for decorating with wooden spools that someone had inherited. I was delighted to find that I was in the presence of author Chris Malone. I wouldn't have known if one of the other ladies hadn't pointed it out! That same quilter, Shirley, looked me up on FB later on that evening and left a comment for me wishing us safe travels. How's that for a welcoming community?

So, I have to admit that I did return home with some fabric. row by rows, fabric license plates and other quilting goodies picked up along the way during our trip. I have plenty to do to keep me busy for a long while - after I get rested up!

I am so thrilled to be included!

When I received the beautiful "Berry Harvest" bundle, generously donated by Cloud 9 from their Organic Cirrus Solids collection, I fell in love with the depth of color. I immediately knew that I wanted to create a block that showed off that depth. In keeping with the theme of "Berry Harvest", I began thinking of our wild blackberries growing along the paths on our property, which began the process of creating a "pathway block".

Just gorgeous!

I had to wait until after my son's Housewarming party to share the project I've been working on since April. We found the best realtor to work with in finding Chance's first home. She was so patient, so helpful, so ready to meet us at a moment's notice at yet another house. She never treated us like we were buying a first-time, lower priced home. We got to know each other so well that I could tell from the look on her face that we had finally found "the one" when she met us at the final house that became Chance's first home.

With the friendship that developed between us, I wanted to do something extra special for Angie to let her know how much her help meant to us. I loved the thought of doing a homes quilt for our special realtor. As I was in the process and discussing it with Chance, he suggested adding him waving from a window of one of the houses. We laughed about it and I said what a great idea it was. And then, I got to thinking...you know that means trouble!

We had a great picture of Chance and Angie in front of his new home, so I decided to change the layout by replacing the middle house block with a picture block. With inkjet printer fabric, it's really so easy once the picture is edited and the printer set up. The key is to read and follow the printer fabric instructions closely to ensure the best possible outcome.

I used the Parkview Lane pattern in the Sept/Oct 2014 edition of Quiltmaker Magazine's Parade of Quilted Homes for my/Angie's quilt.

I meant to get better pictures before giving this to Angie; however, life gets in the way. After celebrating my oldest son's college graduation, mourning the loss of my sons' paternal grandfather, preparing for Chance's housewarming, mourning the loss of our sweet furbaby, etc, etc...

Life moves on. Kids grow up, do their own things in life. Our furbabies become our babies. We rescued Spencer after Shawn left for college in 2008. Eight years later, Shawn has finished his Bachelor's after an extended break and after buying his first home, Chance is settled in his first home and is on to the next phase of his life and career, the step-grandkids are now 14. We have moved to Hawaii and back with Spencer and Heidi-cat (now 16) in tow every step of the way. We've celebrated three years of being back in Virginia; time flies, life moves on and we carry our accomplishments and our losses in our hearts always.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had a lot of fun creating this year's block using the Ocean Sunrise Palette. My husband and I had recently returned from Hawaii and I kept remembering the ocean view from our condo while playing with these beautiful fabrics.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bordeaux is such a luscious color that I wanted to use it as a focal point of the block, thus the jumping dolphin. For a little extra sparkle, I used a metallic silver thread to outline the dolphin and a metallic rainbow thread to outline the cloud. Here's my block, Ocean Fun.

Wow, where did 2015 go? It's interesting looking back to see what quilting projects I completed. I tend to be so focused on my current project that I forget previous finishes. When reviewing my pictures for the year, I grouped my projects in one folder; as I think it's helpful to track progress. My husband tells me with each finish, he can see the improvement in my work (of course he's my biggest cheerleader, so ya know).
OK guys, this was my MONSTER project of 2015. My oldest son was the last to have me make a quilt for him. (The grandkids were first, then my youngest son.) I really didn't know this was going to such a difficult pattern (for me). I learned so much the hard way - trial and error, googling, begging for help on my blog. I learned that not all quilt kits are equal and that not all fabric contained within the quilt kit is equal and not all directions are equal. I also learned to never again use a new type of fabric and a new shape (flannel and chevron in this case) for a project I'm working on without guidance. It took me a year to complete, with just having to walk away and not touch it for several days at a time. I even got to where I dreaded working on it. It's queen size and I stitched in the ditch for the quilting on my Brother VQ-2400.

I received the email yesterday that my block was chosen; but I've been looking forward to the planner coming out since I heard about it a couple of months ago. Take some time to check it out, Stephanie has really worked hard on such a great quilter tool!
So I'm sharing a recent smaller project, a pillow I made for my s-i-l. Here's the thing, she's an artist (like a real educated artist), so I'm a little nervous making things for her.

I downloaded and printed (on printer fabric) a picture of one of her art pieces from Facebook, then designed the pillow around it. I really hope she enjoys our combined artwork.
I used some of Tula Pink's lovely Moon Shine fabric, along with a bit from my stash.
I chose the print on the back because I felt it fit right in with her home in Maine. We're visiting there next week, so I'll be <strike>sneaking it in my husband's suitcase</strike> packing it to give her after we get settled in for our stay.
What I learned on this project: When using a directional print for the back of a pillow, make sure you sew the seams on the panels so they'll be right side up when sewing them on to the front panel. Luckily, that was a pretty quick fix. (The seam ripper is my friend, the seam ripper is my friend...)
And on another note, I'm so surprised to have won the First Blogaversary Giveaway from Sharla at Thistle Thicket Studio! Sharla and I got to know each other through the 2015 New Quilt Bloggers blog hop. She's worked really hard on her blog and it looks great! Sharla has amazing crafty ideas; I've been thinking about making a ceramic pincushion since I saw the rooster pincushion she made on her blog. (Can you believe it, I don't have a single pincushion?!?) I love the typewriter key necklaces she makes too! I'm looking forward to playing with that lovely Shannon Cuddle Charm Pack; I think it would make a lovely baby blanket. What a generous and thoughtful giveaway. Go check out Sharla's thistle thicket studio blog, she's amazingly creative!
When I received the beautiful Fabric-Quilt fabric in gorgeous summer colors, I had a lot of ideas, the first being, what made me think I could create a block? Many ideas centered around Smith Mountain Lake (SML) or the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the Peaks of Otter I see from our front yard. After several sketches and mock up blocks, I settled on a sailboat. (Have I mentioned I haven't done this before?)

What I didn't know when beginning this project was that our area would be mourning the loss of two members of a local news station, who were killed during a live newscast out at Smith Mountain Lake, while interviewing the Executive Director of the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Director was also shot, but survived and is recovering in the hospital. In memory of Adam and Alison, people have been wearing teal (Alison's favorite color) and Va Tech maroon (Adam's favorite) ribbons and clothing. As I was processing my feelings, I created another sailboat block in memory of them using the WDBJ 7's Facebook emblem in use since their deaths.

No this post isn't about quilting. I am just feeling overwhelmed. I was raised in Roanoke VA, the Star City of the South. I've watched as the violence in Roanoke has escalated. I moved to the "country" to raise my sons, some 24 years ago. I now live in Bedford, normally a quiet rural community. Bedford is a large county, but just outside Roanoke at points. Violence has touched our rural community recently, as well. The shooting yesterday happened in the Moneta area. My sons attended school in Moneta, but a good way away from Bridgewater Plaza. Bridgewater Plaza is a nice little local and tourist spot at Smith Mountain Lake. Somewhere I never thought would be the location of an ambush. I'm just feeling so sad. I worry about my family, my sons, young men on their own now, both living in Roanoke. I worry about their partners, I worry about my nieces, I worry about my parents. I wish there was an easy answer to the violence in our society. In 2015, the U.S. has not gone over an 8 day period without a mass shooting. As strongly as I believe our gun laws need to change, I don't believe they will. The NRA has a lot of power and a lot of money.

I'm sad, I'm overwhelmed, I feel deep sorrow. My heart breaks watching the WDBJ7 crew trying to continue reporting on their own colleagues being gunned down while trying not to dissolve in tears. I just needed to get some of these feelings out. Forgive me for using this format, which is usually for sharing our creative experience. Thank you for listening. I ask that you pray for the families of Adam and Allison, two bright stars whose lights were snuffed out by a madman. (What else can I call him?) Please pray for their colleagues and friends at WDBJ7, struggling to continue on publicly through their grief. I do pray that we'll remain #RoanokeStrong.Jingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779559214437636745noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300400295543328833.post-64065194397907612782015-07-20T20:04:00.000-04:002015-07-20T20:04:13.879-04:00Week 4 2015 New Quilt Blogger Hop

Hello friends,

Unfortunately, I haven't felt up to posting lately. I've been in a period of fibro fog. Those of you familiar with Fibromyalgia will understand, I'm sure. I've managed to get some work done in my studio, but I'm pretty wiped out afterward. I have gotten several more Farmgirl Vintage blocks done and I've gotten the tops and bottoms of my son's chevron quilt done. Tomorrow I'm hoping to move on to sewing the rows together. My husband told me he didn't make my design board big enough to hold two quilts so I have to get one finished, LOL. Here's a partial view of the chevron quilt, as well as the FGV blocks I've completed.

Speaking of my sweet husband, he woke me up yesterday, told me he was taking me to lunch and then on to a surprise. After a lovely lunch, we went to the library where the local quilt guild, Peaks and Pieces, was holding a quilt show. Here is some of the beautiful work displayed:

I have to admit, Moody Blues was my favorite and what I voted as Best in Show. When my son was in marching band, I just loved it when they included a Moody Blues piece for their half-time show. If you noticed, the tops and bottoms of his chevron quilt are music notes, which l am also using for the backing.

Hi Quilty Friends,

I hope everyone has had a great weekend. Not only did I get to spend Father's Day with my Dad, I also celebrated my birthday with the family - my two sons and their significant others, my parents, and my wonderful husband. What more could I ask for?

For Father's Day, I made a pillow for my dad with a picture of the 611 steam engine. The 611 is a big deal around here, especially since it was recently refurbished and returned to Roanoke last month.

I used printable fabric in my inkjet printer to print the 611 picture and found some great Riley Blake fabric to frame it. I thought the stars and stripes were awesome!

Just for fun, here's a picture of me today with the ring my sweet husband gave me for my birthday. I actually wore makeup today, I usually only manage that about once a year.
I've posted previously about how excited I was to receive the Farm Girl Vintage book. I have really enjoyed working on the blocks and I think it's now my favorite quilting project! I love picking out the fabric and putting everything together. It still amazes me at how the fabrics are pieced to make the block design.

Yesterday I discovered that I really don't like using plain white fabric as background. I didn't realize that until I spent an awful lot of time trying to find anything else that I could use besides 'just white'. I finally found a grey and white print fabric to use. I think I'm going to have to eventually give in and use a plain white; the next block is the Autumn Star and there's a lot of white background.

Here's what my space looks like when I'm pulling fabric for blocks. This is just one reason I love my studio, I can just turn off the light and leave it until tomorrow (or whenever I can get back to it). If you look closely, you can see a Michael Miller Modern Basics fat quarter bundle that just came in from Massdrop yesterday. (And a big thank you to one of my IG quilting buddies for introducing me to Massdrop!) When I saw this bundle, I knew it would come in handy for my FGV blocks. Plenty of polka dots and houndstooth!

Here are my 12" blocks so far. I completely messed up the Apron Strings block; but I think it's my favorite and my hubby says it's definitely his.

Of course, the problem with having so much fun with these blocks is the project that's still looming on my design board, DUNH DUNH DUNH!

Luckily my son isn't in a hurry for it, especially since it's a flannel quilt and we've been in the 90s of late. My goal is to spend part of each day in the studio sewing together at least one row to break up the frustration, LOL.

Happy quilting friends!
Aloha, I'm Jinger and I'm happy to be a member of the 2015 New Quilt Bloggers Blog Hop. Many thanks to our Sew Fabulous hive leader, Stephanie, over at www.latenightquilter.com.
A little about me, I 've been married for 11 years to a wonderfully supportive husband. I have two adult sons, 25 & 22 (who are still my babies, I don't care how old they are) and I am a step-grandmother to 13 year old twins, a girl and boy.

I began seriously quilting in October 2014 after our move back from the Big Island of Hawaii to Bedford Virginia. I had struggled with not feeling productive since my retirement, but coping with chronic illnesses prevented me from moving forward. My sweet husband set up a studio for me in our new home, which enables me to have everything ready to just walk in and work whenever I feel up to it. Because I'm not able to go out often, besides doctor appointments, finding quilting blogs has been really helpful to me. I didn't find many blogs featuring newbie quilters like me, so I started this one.
I like to post what I've learned at the end of my various projects. The biggest lesson I recently learned in quilting is to use scraps to test instructions that aren't necessarily clear. Do you find ending project tips helpful?

In blogging I've learned to reach out to others when I have questions and not to be afraid to post about mistakes I've made. Are you someone that enjoys offering tips to newbie quilters?

It isn't pretty at this moment. I can't tell you how many times these chevrons have been knocked off the board, particularly the bottom ones, as you can tell. My doggies like to keep me company in the studio and sometimes their tails wreak havoc.

One of the things I've learned since beginning this quilting adventure is that all quilt kits aren't the same. The first kit I worked on was from Craftsy and had step by step instructions. Silly newbie me thought that all kits would be like that, hahaha. So, I saw this kit on sale and thought, great deal, I'll get it and eventually figure it out. Then, my oldest son, the last "kid" (at 25) to have a quilt made for him chose this kit for his quilt. Not only had I not worked with chevrons before, I hadn't worked with flannel either. The instructions didn't tell me how to put the chevrons together, so after doing some internet surfing, I found that the 'ears' should stick out 1/4". Great... or not! I am beginning to dread working on this quilt. I spend so much time measuring and ironing and trying to make sure the ears are exactly 1/4" and then end up ripping out as much as I'm sewing together. I'm so happy to have it half-way done (the left side as you can see) but I'm hoping for some suggestions to make this chevron piecing process easier.

This is the way I'm measuring each chevron ear.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? I'd really appreciate some advice!
I worked about four hours on the Corn and Tomatoes Block. I was so careful with starching and ironing and cutting and sewing 1/4" seams. 'Sew' darn it, what happened to the points in the middle?!? ARGH! I'm trying to decide whether to take it apart and try again or to make a new block. My husband says to stop obsessing (of course). I love my husband, he's just the best cheerleader anyone could ever ask for!
I am happy with the fabrics I chose. I'm not used to pulling fabrics and putting them together; but I think I did a pretty good job.

I was absolutely delighted to actually accomplish putting this block together. When I first looked at the picture, I thought how on earth am I going to do this? There were two blocks on today's sew along schedule; but, I was exhausted after finishing this one, and it was already past dinner time. Maybe tomorrow I'll get to the next one, or maybe I'll be re-doing this one, or maybe I'll get back to work on the quilt on my design board...

As I'm hopping along to visit my fellow hive members' blogs, I found something I needed to do for Bloglovin' to "claim my blog" under the new Sewing category.

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I had to post the above link to claim my blog. If you're on Bloglovin' and you haven't claimed your blog yet, you may want to consider it. Claiming your blog on Bloglovin' allows you to see your blog analytics and connects you to social media, if you wish.
Hoping to connect with everyone soon!Jingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779559214437636745noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300400295543328833.post-56055966890086821882015-06-02T22:49:00.000-04:002015-06-02T22:49:28.824-04:00Farm Girl VintageI was so excited to receive my happy mail from Fat Quarter Shop (seriously, if you quilt, you know them fatquartershop) at the end of last week. Don't you just love getting a box of quilty goodness? Nope, this wasn't squishy mail, but a box with beautiful fabric and what I've been waiting for, the Farm Girl Vintage book by Lori Holt of beeinmybonnet

There's been so much fun on Instagram with #farmgirlvintage, I just couldn't stand to be out of the loop any longer! There's a sew along on Fridays at farmgirlvintagesewalong and different bloggers host each week.

I was so excited to make something from the book that I chose the Baking Day block because I thought it would make a good potholder for my kitchen. Here's my 6" block, blue marks and all, sorry about that! I'm going to work on finishing it, so I can start catching up with the sew along.

Now that I have an idea of how the blocks work, I'm going to switch over to 12" blocks and hopefully complete a sampler quilt.

Happy quilting!
She just graduated from JMU with a Bachelor's degree and is now pursuing her Master's, as she prepares for a teaching career. Originally, I had made the hour basket thinking I would give that to her, but decided to make something more versatile for her gift. I read that a teacher can never have too many totes, and she is still in college, so I decided on a tote for her. Here's the thing, I learn by doing and often change horses in mid-stream. So, while I was in the middle of making the tote using the Egg Finding Bag tutorial from sewcanshe.com, I thought I bet I can make this reversible and twice as useful! I then referred to another tutorial from Skiptomylou.org, "How to make a simple (reversible) tote bag".

I wanted the bag to be sturdy, so I used canvas for one side and quilting fabric for the other. Originally, I was going to try to do something using JMU colors, but just couldn't find coordinating purple and gold that I liked. So, I used the same canvas that I used for the outside of the hour basket and found a nice blue and white medallion print in my stash to coordinate for the other side. Again, thinking canvas would be sturdier, I opted to use the canvas for the handles. I also made an "S" template and appliqued one on each side of the tote.

I wasn't quite happy with the way the handles turned out. After finishing, I went back and fabric glued the edges of the handles, then zig-zagged stitched the ends to correct fraying issues. The tote finished at 16" x 16".

On this project, I learned that if the directions aren't quite clear to sew a sample with extra fabric to make sure the process is going to work.Jingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779559214437636745noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300400295543328833.post-48057725676597563362015-05-19T20:26:00.000-04:002015-05-19T20:33:12.394-04:00One Hour BasketI was able to work on a quick project Saturday. The free 1 Hour Basket tutorial was kindly shared by Hearts & Bees on Craftsy and can be found on the Craftsy site.

Let me be honest, it took me a few hours; but I am still a newbie. I had a great canvas find I had picked up at Tuesday Morning and this looked like a good project to use it. The cute fat quarter for the inside was from FreeSpirit Fabrics' Bridgette Lane collection, designed by Valori Wells. .Aren't those little elephants adorable? I could so see this as a diaper holder or burp cloth holder.

I didn't have any fusible fleece onhand, but hoped the canvas would be sturdy enough to give the basket enough stability and, of course,

when I added a bunch of my Free Spirit fat quarter bundles, it did!

This was a fun, quick project with great instuctions. Now, I need to make several more for the rest of my fat quarter bundles :)

Happy quilting!Jingerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01779559214437636745noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300400295543328833.post-65816722134263692292015-05-14T20:06:00.000-04:002015-05-14T20:48:26.439-04:00Dogwoods and Butterflies QuiltI've been absent for awhile due to a trip to Hawaii, then a family reunion trip to TN. When I got rested up from traveling, I had to get my mom's birthday/Mother's Day gift finished.

I fell in love with the AQS 30th Anniverary Dogwood Fabric Collection and ordered the half-yard collection. (Of course, I then added additional yardage as it went on sale.) Mom loves green and Dogwood is Virginia's state flower, so I combined the two and set out to create a quilt for her.

My inspiration came from Dogwood Blossoms, Sylvia Schaefer's quilt featured in McCall's Quick Quilts May 2015 edition:
http://www.mccallsquilting.com/quickquilts/articles/Dogwood-Blossoms-Springtime-Applique-Quilt-Pattern

I chose Kona Cotton Tarragon for the blocks of my quilt and created the flowers with the Dogwood fabric using my Sizzix Dogwood/Rose petals die, alternating small and large and dark and light flower blocks. I used a dark green polka-dot fabric for the centers of the flowers. Using fusible adhesive to attach the petals and the centers to the fabric, I then applique stitched around the pieces.

For the sashing to connect the blocks, I chose the Blue/Green Pearlized (leaves and berries) Dogwood fabric.

See that little butterfly in the middle? Lucky me, while I was working on the idea for this quilt, I won a pack of Shabby Fabric's new laser pre-cut, pre-fused 3" butterflies from Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts. Alyce then kindly sent me her left over shapes and her remaining April Showers charm pack and some cute heart-shaped buttons! Seriously, how sweet is that?!? You can find Alyce at http://www.blossomheartquilts.com Gosh, I hope to get to her level of quilting one day.

So, of course, I added some butterflies to the quilt, which really made it pop. After fusing the butterflies, I applique stitched around them using a silver metallic thread, which my mom quickly noticed while admiring her gift, SCORE! For binding, I used the Blue Petals Dogwood Fabric and back to the Tarragon for the backing. Dogwood and Butterflies finished at 40 x 41".

I have to say that I am so very proud of this quilt. It's the first quilt I've created the pattern for, first time I've appliqued, first time I've made a quilt uing blocks and the first time I've gifted a quilt to someone who really understands what goes into making them. Although Mom didn't quilt (she sewed our clothes when I was small) her mother quilted and I'm lucky to have a couple of quilts from my beloved Grandma Sallie. So, of course, I had to add the label on the back just in case I'm lucky enough to have it live on:

What I learned this time:

Shoot, make sure to add that 1/4" seam allowance to the blocks before trimming! When I trimmed them all to 6", I ended up being a bit short in connecting some of the blocks.

Leave enough extra fabric to overlap and join the ends of the binding, ARGH!

Always double-check to be sure the phrasing is spelled correctly before pushing the button to sew the lettering on the label. The letters are close together on my machine and I ended up with an "n" where there was supposed to be an "o". Not to mention, it took two days of work to get the label how I wanted it.

Before fusing, make sure the rows are placed correctly. The flower blocks were actually supposed to alternate between large and small within the rows. I actually didn't even notice until I was wrapping the gift, LOL!

When I'm in tears and ready to quit, just remember...

this makes it all worth while...
It's great seeing the results of my creative efforts so quickly! We've made a couple of recent trips to visit friends and it's so fun giving secially crafted pillows to them. I based my patterns on Jere Brandvig's QAYG Berries and Cream pillow in McCall's Quick Quilts Feb/March 2015 edition. (I also have Jere's Quilt-As-You-Go Made Modern book, which is beautifully done.) I like to make pillows based on something unique to the recipient, so I begin with choosing the fabric for the center of the pillow and build from there. I made this pillow for my friend Kim, who has several birds in her home. I joked that if Kim were a bird, she'd look like the one I used for her pillow.

I didn't quilt the one for Kim; it was pretty decorative and I didn't feel it needed the extra quilting.
